Teenagers And Their First Jobs

Written by Mika Shantor on August 18th, 2009

It pays to teach a teen early on about being independent. This sense of independence can make teenagers treat challenges of everyday life in a more mature way. An effective strategy of training teenagers is making them experience the life as it is. One way of doing so is letting them work.

When you get a job, it requires you to learn certain tasks and become good at them. This will also give a teenager a sense of accomplishment along with the reward of getting paid to do it. Learning how to earn money is important in any young persons life because up to then, all they have done is spend. Everyone must be taught the value of money and getting a job is one of the first steps.

There are many jobs available for teenagers in the city, and one simply has to look closely. Job postings for teenagers can often be found in newspapers, bulletin boards, and other such places. However, competition is tough in this kind of job hunting, so it would give your teenager an edge s/he comes prepared.

An older teen should start thinking of creating a simple resume if they are serious about job hunting. At that age it is okay to keep it simple by including the name, address, grade level, skills, awards, and any other job experience they might have had. It might also briefly state the type of job the teen is hoping to find and why they think they are best suited for it.

After determining the right industry for the teen, visit the establishment to inquire about an opening. Normally, a job for teenagers requires minimal experiences or skills. After doing so, keep the contact details of the companies youve visited. Contact them after about four days and inquire about the status of your application. Point out your eagerness for the position. Remember to remain polite and professional during the entire conversation.

Jobs for teens often include restaurant jobs, retail jobs, camp counselor jobs, and all sorts of yard work. Within those industries teens can be cashiers, store clerks, busboys, dishwashers, and attendants. Teens can also run odd errands for neighbors, and do chores like lawn mowing, dogs walking, or washing cars. These opportunities could harness your childs skills and boost their self-esteem, further aiding them for the future.
