Watching a wonderful motion picture permits us to loosen up and flee our day by day troubles, anxieties and worries, while we get caught up in the lives and situations of the characters in the movie. Lantana – Touching, mature tale of relationships obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)

The Search – Heartrending drama of American cadet Clift regarding for concentration camp survivor Jandl in postwar Berlin, when the lad’s mother dejectedly looks all over the camps for him. Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes, 1948)

The Defiant – A fascinating tale of 2 fugitive convicts, one black and one white who are chained together as they escape from prison in the South. Fine performances by Williams and Chaney as individuals they meet during the voyage. Academy Prize for screenplay by Harold Jacob Smith and Nathan E. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier, Theodore Bike, Charles McGraw, Carnie Williams, and Lon Chaney, Jr. (97 minutes, 1958)

The Facts of Life – Excellent comedy with Bob and Lucy leaving their partners for an interlude together. The 2 megastars make a team worth watching. Cast includes Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Ruth Hussey, and Don DeFore. (103 minutes, 1960)

Dingo – An unexpected appearance by jazz trumpeter Billy Cross (Davis) in a young man’s rural town empowers him to become a musician himself. Now grown up, he still fantasies of playing for a living and honoring his lifelong hero. This friendly but dull paced tale is kindled by Miles Davis’ dynamic presence and fawning behavior. Cast includes Colin Friels, Miles Davis, Helen Buday, Joe Petruzzi, Bernadette Lafont, and Bernard Fresson. (108 minutes, 1991)

Bullitt – Perfect McQueen antihero role that he grows to love. As a police officer trying to keep his witness alive. McQueen sees a ton of mayhem as the mafia is out to slay the man he must protect. Cast includes Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, and Robert Duvall. (113 minutes, 1968)
