Printing Services – A Brief History
Written by Dean Smith on February 23rd, 2010
Print medium is a popular and powerful means of distributing information to numerous different types of individuals, and can be seen even these days. With the passage of time the printing services industry has become big immensely & has evolved to its present form of a varied industry. Today it can address almost any demand of the clients connected with printing & its ancillary requirements.
Bulk printing services first began sometime in the–00\’s when Gutenberg invented the first printing press and the whole idea of relief printing was developed. A slight elevation of the printed image from the background, like it is in a rubber stamp, is a key characteristic of relief printing. This type of printing has however gone almost out of use these days, though not completely dead.
Printing techniques have changed greatly down the years, and these transformations have been brought about by introduction of newer technologies. Modern printing methods are quite diverse and have a range of uses. In fact, most clients now feel overwhelmed with the printing choices available in the market.
Of all printing techniques in the market today, offset printing tops the list in popularity. In this method, minimum ink is used to print the image, which is first applied on metal plates and is then transferred onto paper. This kind of printing is very inexpensive and fast, and it is mostly preferred when large volumes of prints are needed.
Evolution in printing technology has also given birth to other printing techniques like thermal printing, that involves heating of coated thermal paper, and electrostatic printing, that is akin to photocopying.
However, digital printing is the latest printing technique that is getting a lot of attention. As the name tells you, in this method, images are created on a computer, which are then examined for correctness and are then printed. This method is faultless and fast, but it is best suited only for a limited number of prints. As the printer can customize each print in this technique, it can be used for computer form printing, where documents such as receipts or invoices can be printed for different clients, with each having the same format but varying contents.
Another vital development in printing has dawned with the arrival of the internet. Printing companies have their own websites that customers can use from right inside their homes or offices and place orders after seeing online printing samples.
Printing has always taken giant evolutionary leaps with the advancement in technology. The great news is that this trend of change is going to continue unabated in the future too, bringing positive advancements to enhance performance and reduce costs.
