Long Term Ozone Danger – Too Much Exposure Can Kill You
Written by Gareth Petrov on September 28th, 2009
A study that might see you giving more attention to the quality of the air breathed in has recently been released via the ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’.
It showed that long-term exposure to ground level ozone gases substantially raises the risk of dying from breathing complications. In fact, the risk is at least 30% greater in the cities with the highest ozone concentrations when compared to those locations with the lowest concentrations of ozone gases.
It followed 450,000 subjects across 96 metropolitan regions over an 18-year period. During the 18-year period, Riverside California was found to have the highest concentrations, whilst, at the other end of the scale, the San Francisco had the lowest.
More often than not, cities towards the north-east of America had lesser concentrations than states in the west such as California. Los Angeles had a 43% bigger risk, while Washington DC came in at 27% and New York at 25%.
A good way to lower the risk is to your outdoors jobs and chores during the morning, or in the late afternoon in order to avoid the sunniest, hottest hours, particularly if you live in a warmer climate. Keeping your windows unopened when ozone levels are highest is also advised.
In general, educate yourself about the world you live in. Seriously consider limiting the amount of time that you’re exposed to a gas that experts are increasingly finding to be dangerous. This study on itself isn’t conclusive but it gives a pretty clear indication that danger is all around us.
If you, or your family or friends, be suffering from respiratory problems, you might want to keep an eye on the levels of ozone gases in the town or city in which you or they reside. Though it might seem drastic to relocate to another area, it could result in prolonging their or your life by a few years.
