Industrial Design – An Important Element Of Business
Written by Johnny Bernabe on February 24th, 2010
Industrial design applies a blend of art and science for working upon a product in a way that there is an increase in its commercial value through improved looks and functionality. Industrial design can be applied before the introduction of a new product or for improvement of a current product.
The main consideration of industrial design is the way in which the consumer will relate to the product. It means the customers should see the products as something desirable and worth spending their money on. The desired result in such cases can be achieved by enhancing the features as well as appearance of the product, in order to make the product attractive to several customers.
This requires a comprehensive research into the patterns of consumer habits, which can then be considered by the designers of the product. This step is then followed by designing, model making, prototyping and final testing before launch of the item in the market. These days, the designers are making greater use of techniques like 3D software and CAD applications for dealing with these jobs.
Industrial designing essentially emphasizes on the overall texture and shape of a product. Designers see how sturdy, multifunctional, ergonomic and easy to use a product can be made, besides working on its aesthetic features like colour and sound, such as the melodies in a mobile phone. Moreover, a designer can also successfully decrease the costs of production by making more efficient designs.
Industrial design is not limited to the above aspects but also includes other considerations like packaging, analysis of the market demand for the item, and also the study of the consumer\’s response to the product\’s design. Therefore, industrial designers have to undergo a rigorous training for several years before working on a live project.
Some of the famous industrial designers of the modern era are Jonathan Ive, who is the designer of the iMac; Brooks Stevens, the well known designer of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and Raymond Loewy, who designed the Coca-Cola bottle.
