Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of several myths created by layman\’s imagination. Some regard them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Provided below are some common beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It borders more on the science of psychology and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. The genuineness of hypnosis is doubted even by individuals who have watched it casting its spell on subjects. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. That individual is just in a calm state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. Although, the finding has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the identical hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can\’t be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different characters.

Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a mental state and usually has nothing to do with communication. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, while communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.

Another myth is that physical and behavioural alterations in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

If a person falls for all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn\’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a better and healthier life.
