Written by Mick Euan Tait on November 27th, 2009

Almost everyone understands that you must exercise to maintain good physical health, however many people simply have no wish to exercise. Often you will hear the excuses are that they do not have the time to exercise or it is too much hassle trying to find something that is interesting, and not boring. Then again, there are many people that are aware of the ever increasing number of obese or overweight people and they don’t want to become like that, so they know that they should do some form of exercise.

The problem for many is that they don’t want to just exercise for the sake of keeping fit. So they look for ideas about a sport to take up to get fitter, but if you are middle aged or a senior, you maybe should not be considering taking up triathlons or football. Golf, on the other hand, is a sport that is suitable for those both male or female, and young or old.

Taking up the Sport of Golf to Get Fit

Golf, as a sport, is quite easy to get started in the sense that you don’t have to prepare for months to take part – like a triathlon. Once you have been playing golf for a while, you will find out that it is highly entertaining and fun. This is the missing key to actually going out and doing some exercise, because if you enjoy what you are doing, you will be astonished at how often you look for reasons to play. This is why golf has emerged as a sport that provides numerous previously inactive people with a good pretext to get up and get started with some exercise.

In the Beginning

In the beginning it is better to start playing shorter golf courses, maybe 9 holes, until you can improve your general physical abilities to let you to be capable of handling the physical requirements for a full’-holes. Because we are talking about golf as a sport, we need to discard the use of golf carts as this defeats the benefits of golf to get fit. This makes it necessary to have the physical strength to be able to walk the entire golf course before you can think about playing a round of golf. It may turn out that for your first few games you can only play a handful of the holes. This may seem discouraging but by continuously playing, you will manage to develop your stamina and strength to allow you to walk and golf all of the holes.

Increasing Your Fitness Level

On the whole, golf is quite a good sport for allowing you to slowly break into an exercise schedule. When you first start golf you will be taking golf lessons which will permit you to start off slowly by working on your golfswing. You will be developing your flexibility and golf muscles at the same time you work on your golf swing.

Although some people tell you that you can play golf when you are overweight and unfit, this is not accurate. True, you could ride around in a golf cart and get out to take a rigid swing to move the ball along the fairway a little distance at a time, but this is not what golf is about. If you are at all serious about improving your health and fitness through golfing, you will want to in the end play golf skilfully. After you are able to shoot a few pars and birdies, you will look forward to working on your fitness and flexibility so that you can get improve even more.

If you love playing golf then you will not mind getting up early to go to the course. If you want to take your game to a higher level, you will not mind putting in the effort to do some exercising to work on your golf muscles and a flexibility program to develop your suppleness. Once you are passionate about golf you will find that because you want to improve your golf swing you will also be working on getting into shape for golf and staying fit.
