Drug and Alcohol Addiction Can Be Dealt With If You Know How

Written by Dawn Enstruthe on August 30th, 2009

Addiction to drug or alcohol is not to be taken lightly. When one suffers from substance addiction, his life is not the only one affected but also that of his loved ones. Many lives have already been ruined because of this which is why treatment must be done without delay once it is detected.

A lot of different components are taken into account to treat this chronic disease. It is chronic in the sense that there could be relapse or recurrence after an abstinence of long periods just like diabetes, asthma and hypertension.

For this reason, repeated treatments are sometimes needed before one can actually say safely that he is cured from the addiction. Treatment can happen by developing a program must be developed based on the needs of the patient.

Basically, treatment for drug and alcohol addiction is categorized into two: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. To determine which type of treatment would be administered, the preferences of the patient and the severity of his condition must be considered.

The inpatient treatment is the usual preference of the patients who already have a history of substance use. The primary advantage of this type of treatment is that it is administered in a highly structured environment. Thus, the patient is given close and constant supervision. Inpatient treatment could last from six to twelve months. Two months from this period may involve very intense treatment. Inpatient treatment concentrates on changing the patient’s behavior in order to make it easy for him to fit back into the community.

The outpatient treatment, on the other hand, involves the need to visit a therapy center regularly. Therapies may be done individually or in groups. The patient will be asked to join a class that will serve as his support system. Outpatient treatment also involves motivational incentives and interviews, and family therapies.

A medical professional is the one who can best decide which type of treatment is appropriate for the patient suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. The essential thing to remember is that the treatment should be done at once. The addiction could give rise to more serious complications, thus, no time should be wasted when it comes to treatment. Do not wait for the patient to inflict permanent harm or do something which he may regret for the rest of his life. Putting him under treatment shows only that you truly love him and wants him to recover.
